A deep dive and new perspectives
Like so many out there, but much more than anyone else I knew personally, I LOVE Laura Ingalls Wilder and her books. I read all of them many, many times, as well as Prairie Fires, Pioneer Girl, and some other related books. Even with that, I am picking up some new things from this podcast. I find that the nuances and conflicts highlighted enhance rather than diminish my enjoyment of these books - keeps them more interesting than a simple fairy tale would be. I was moved to write today by the discussion of Pa - since about adolescence it’s occurred to me that he was actually not making great decisions for his family. When I read about Rose, one of my first thoughts about her was that SHE had bipolar disorder. She was also certainly wildly talented - but rash, unreliable, and difficult. The building of Rock House is classic. And the photo of her as a newlywed in Prairie Fires is haunting. It would make perfect sense that there were some mood disorders running in the family. Great work, thanks so much for doing this.

As more of a reader than show watcher, I read all I could find about Laura and her life as I got older—I had to know! Naming my daughters Mary and Laura says something about the impact...Read full review »
