Guns
While the discussion on how to talk with patients and families about firearm safety was informative, I found much of the discussion problematic. With the talk of gun safety (great) and how there aren’t many accidents involving guns, the doctors didn’t mention the rise in the number of mass shootings, the proliferation of and easy access to guns. Both doctors sounded very defensive about being questioned about gun safety. The guest doctor talked about all that he’s doing related to gun safety by bringing a coalition together, which sounded good, until he said that that included the NRA (“bless their heart”). Gun safety is not the only topic that may engender patient discomfort: weight (under/over), tobacco and other substance use, mental health, and violence in the home. Asking patients “Is it ok if I ask you about…? makes it sound as though the provider is apologizing for asking the question.

Better production would make a huge difference. Also, please stop using the term “provider”. COPIC itself has a CME module which explains the importance of distinguishing between physicians, PAs, and APRNs. We are not equivalent.
