The early idea for the lotus flower design of the stadium came from the Evergrande Group chairman Hui Ka Yan, and it was designed by American designer Hasan Syed, who lives in Shanghai. It refers to Guangzhou, Evergrande's home city, which is sometimes called the "city of flowers." The CEO of Evergrande Group, Xia Hajun, said that the stadium would be "an important symbol of Chinese soccer going to the world," and compared it to famous buildings like Australia's Sydney Opera House and the United Arab Emirates' Burj Khalifa in Dubai. The stadium will have a floor area of 150,000 square meters and will include 16 Very Very Important Person (VVIP) private areas, 152 Very Important Person (VIP) areas, as well as spaces for players and media. "We hope the stadium will host the opening ceremony of the 2023 Asian Cup," Xia said.
