Very helpful!
Particularly the emphasis he places on ensuring your plot and scenes are driven by character (and your character by needs) has really helped me identify why I was starting to feel, as I neared the end of act 2, that my screenplay had gotten away from me. I was writing too many scenes in which characters vent different aspects of their frustrations, or doubts, or beefs with each other—perhaps hoping that if they talk enough they’ll finally convince me too—and not enough where I knew so well what those wants and needs were that they didn’t need to speak much at all. To synthesize Jacob’s further wisdom with regard to this into a new rule of thumb: when your characters are talking too much, it’s also likely because you’re “puppeting” them to serve the plot. I know I was. Thanks for a great podcast!

I’m always amazed at the patience and reflective they use to address what makes / breaks / and takes to write a well crafted screenplay. Thanks for letting me in sitting in on these classes...

I absolutely love this podcast and look forward to every episode. Jacob breaks down films and explains why they worked or why they didn't work like no other. Each podcast inspires me to keep writing. Even if you are not a writer, this podcast will help you enjoy films even more.Read full review »
