Excellent lectures. The angle works well: telling the history of the byzantine empire through the history of its emperors. The strengh of this approach also constitutes its weakness -- no coverage of the daily life in the Empire. But that's a valid choice. May I suggest a "part 2" to this series...Read full review »

I'm writing this review at a time when only the first four lectures are extant. These give an excellent introduction to the subject with academic depth balanced by interesting human detail. Mr. Brownworth has presented an incredibly insightful description of the late Roman / Byzantine Empire. I have listened to the lectures repeatedly and find new connections to ponder. If you love history, this is for you.
