Humanizing the personalities behind the bright lights and the majestic knocks...
Dear Dan, Admittedly I was *beyond tempted* to write a full review of A SWING AND A BELT after my very first listen (usually) at the gym way back when, but decided to hold off. Why? I wanted my awe to sink in and fully-permeate the red blood cells... What you and the Sportsnet gang have succeeded in doing with this new(ish) cast is add yet *another* layer of diamond mystery to the "matryoshka" (Russian nested dolls) of Toronto Blue Jays baseball. If I wasn't already an out-and-out rabid fan of our Jays -- when it would seem all time ceases as you, Ben, and Mike broadcast your various idiosyncratic play-by-play styles over the airwaves -- then with the new in-depth punch-in on the personalities comprising the entertainment at Rogers Centre, my addiction is all the greater! First, allow me to begin with hosannahs: while I'm sure you're often told, likely from the time you were (your) Ben's age, the Shulman-esque stentorian tones act as a reassuring force upon the otherwise feral Torontonian baseball beast! There's no more pure radio voice out there, next to Mike's and Ben's, that is, hehe. It -- like Mike's and Ben's -- projects true authority, deep baseball savvy, and -- what plenty of fellow sportscasters regrettably aren't nearly as adept at, IMO -- you all share a heap of colorful entertaining anecdotes. Time passes in most pleasurable of ways, even if the Jays aren't on the winning side of the ledger. And y'all really really get along! We listeners can tell that you all love coming down to the ballpark(s), that broadcasting our boys is the trio's sheer pleasure. You love what you do. Kevin Brown, Chris Leroux, and Kevin Barker included. May I also commend you for your choice of superb guests lately: Ben's short clip with Tim Langton the other week was particularly illuminating because how unusual it is -- as I'd mentioned recently to Tim -- that we Jays fans across Canada are so familiar with Tim -- on a kinship-level -- but we know practically nothing about the man! Your son was able to shine a klieg there... Plus, as I *just* finished listening to your interview with Paul Beeston today at the gym...what is there to say?! The Jays corporate icon is statesmanlike with his small-town aw-shucks beaming positivity, slapdashed with mastery of the front office day-to-day. Like in Tim's case, another example of a dude Torontonians know so very well -- on a family-level -- yet somehow missing something...which you succeeded in banishing today. Plus it's fun as hell when they politely grill you on some of your mild "trespasses" (egs. Gibby, Beest, etc.). It totally humanizes The Shulmanator. So, in short, you definitely have won a dedicated listener in me. Major kudos to the production team on the new concept and keep up the full-court press! AND LOVING THOSE RETROSPECTIVE BROADCAST BITS WITH THE LATE-GREAT TOM CHEEK as you occasionally wax nostalgic for those terrific Jays clubs of yore -- when we all came of age. How I miss Tom's voice sometimes, as we will miss Jerry's. Can't wait when Jerry drops by for a hullo Jays fans again and asks to take the helm for an inning or two. That'd be a treat! Let's win this AL East and bring the World Series ring back north of the border!Read full review »

Dan Shulman’s work has always made a bit prouder to be Canadian; this excellent podcast simply reaffirms that conviction. Keep it up, Dan. And your boy, Ben, is proof the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.
