“I recently found "A Tale of Two Hygienists" listed in Dental Economics podcast episode and, as a lover of podcasts and dentistry, was intrigued to check it out. As a dentist, I was looking forward to hearing dental topics from the hygienist perspective and getting "in the mind" of what their day to day trials and tribulations are like.
I have a great working relationship with my two hygienists, both of who are relatively new grads, and am always looking for ways to coordinate efforts to beat treat our patients. I also have an amazing, hard working dental assistant who is in the process of applying to hygiene school, so I thought the podcast would be a great resource for me to help guide her as well.
I was dismayed to hear Michelle's negative attitude towards dentists as a whole, and it turned me off the podcast. In the "How to pass the hygiene board exam" you hear her disgust that a dentist is one of the board examiners and she comments how, if competent, this dentist must be the one exception to all others.
I was also disappointed to hear her call out dentists for not being good leaders/managers, while at the same time expressing she hates the business side of hygiene would to "take a nap" during talk of it (Dr Salierno's episode) because all she wants to do is patient care. As a dentist and hygienist, you have to know the business side of things. We live in an insurance-centric world (unfortunately) and it's imperative to know how this affects our patients and the care the receive and what they ultimately pay out of pocket for. PPOs have a huge impact on dental practices. It's irresponsible, for both dentists and hygienists, to turn a blind eye to all things aside from patient care.
I very much like the idea of this podcast, but as a dentist I don't feel welcome as a listener.”Read full review »
