I'm an NPR/Freakonomics type of podcast listener - but found ABG had something I never knew I needed
I never thought I would ever be interested in a podcast like this; I tend to prefer more informational oriented podcasts like Stuff You Should Know, Planet Money, Freakonomics, 99% Invisible, etc. But I decided to give this podcast a shot because I heard about one of the hosts through the grapevine that is Asians working in the Big 4. I ended up listening to all 22 episodes in the span of a week and a half. The discussions on side projects helped me find a lot more fulfilment in my job. Like Janet and Helen, I sometimes felt like I "sold out" career wise and picked a safe, generic, career path. But the commentary that "your job doesn't make you who you are", and the idea that people try to make their jobs be too many things, really resonated with me. I was encouraged to pick up my saxophone that I hadn't touched since college and start playing again, sharing my music on Instagram. I got involved with community outreach programs at my firm to mentor high school students in underserved areas. I even got more involved with campus recruiting at my firm. Helen said that she hoped to one day be that role model for a young Asian American starting out their career - well as a new Senior 1, Helen is definitely that person to me. The experiences Helen has shared on this podcast, particularly those around time management, have encouraged me to have more valuable coaching sessions with the staff which has made delegation much more efficient. ABG has helped me make positive developments in my personal life as well. Most notably, Janet and Helen's experiences packing up and moving cross country inspired me to finally pull the trigger and make that happen for me too. As a born and raised southern Californian, I realized things were "just fine" here and I decided it was time for a change. I am now in final stage interviews for jobs in NYC and plan to move in the next few months. I don't think any podcasts I've listened have captivated me to the same extent that you inspirational women have. You three have a unique talent to bring the listener into your friendship, as if we're right there with you enjoying glasses of wine, joking around, and sharing stories. Thanks for what you do.Read full review »
