The hosts don’t provide critical commentary on games so much as talk at length about their own personal tastes and experiences, speaking in constant hyperbolic generalisations like “X is a bad game that no one wants to play” and “everyone loved Y”. As someone who hasn’t played a lot of the games...Read full review »

A great podcast about games, breaking down both games themselves and the systems that make them, a great listen.

A good podcast for critical analysis of video games as a storytelling medium. The two hosts clearly consume/consider a lot of other kinds of media – this results in interesting discussions grounded in a level of media literacy that’s hard to find in video game discourse. Typically, they spend as...Read full review »

Just the tip of a great collection of podcasts across the network about all manner of media. Video games rule though.

Happy birthday Em! Here’s to 9 more years of asking y’all to play strategy games.

This is a great podcast! The hosts discuss a different game each month, book club style. Crucially, the games are usually old and sometimes niche, exposing the listener to a much wider variety of games than a typical games podcast might discuss. The discussions themselves are rich,...Read full review »

The hosts have a smug and unpleasant attitude, their podcasting style is awkward with lots of bad jokes and dead air, and I didn’t find any particular insights worth listening to in the two episodes I tried. Give it a miss.

It’s quickly become my go-to podcast when out walking. Great chemistry between them, interesting selection of games, and often very funny. It’s also rekindled my enthusiasm for gaming, for better or worse. It’s also very amusing listening them in no particular order (I started with just...Read full review »

I’ve really enjoyed listening to this podcast. I don’t play games that often but the host’s chemistry and passion for gaming shines through even when I have no idea of the games they’re talking about. Also has fun music breaks. High recommendation

In-depth, intelligent discussions about a medium where it can be hard to find this.

In need for a critical game podcast from two nonbinary, ace-related, freelance writers? Abnormal Mapping has your back. AM focuses on older games to disentangle themselves from the overwhelming feeds of on-demand response in order to to revaulate them and to side-step The Games Canon. Em and...Read full review »

The folks on Abnormal Mapping do a good job of making thematic discussions of video games personal, engaging, and approachable.

AM is - without a doubt - one of the great up-and-comers of games crit. M and Jackson (and Destiny, when she appears) are really smart folks. I appreciate their deep dives into game guts, a la the monthly book club format. Not only does it let them speak to more substantial takeaways, it means I...Read full review »

I love Abnormal Mapping! The structure is super engaging and never gets boring, Jackson's whole Hugh Grant thing is very charming, and Matthew is a stupendous, very experienced host. Their guests have all been excellent, and I've discovered plenty of fascinating games from their Gameography...Read full review »

A great, thoughtful, and funny podcast. Jackson makes me laugh my butt off while Matthew keeps things grounded enough to keep the conversation going. They’re a great pairing and the occasional guest is great too! It’s entertaining enough that I listen, even when they cover games I don’t think...Read full review »
