Shallow, Left-Leaning Historical Narrative. There Are Better Alternatives.
This show is pretty shallow and is unlikely to please serious history enthusiasts more conditioned to Hardcore History or History on Fire. It presents a typically left-leaning narrative on historical events— the same drivel I heard throughout my undergrad. “America was really equally responsible for all the evil events in the world...” it’s a more tasteful version of the Howard Zinn historical revision series. I found many of the points to be infelicitously misleading due to the withholding of specific facts designed to support the chosen narrative. For example (and ironically) the episode on propaganda states that “conservative’s” attempts at propping up segregation in the south threatened to derail the “liberal’s” efforts to end it and support American liberalism around the globe. This is extremely misleading as the “conservatives” of this era were almost entirely of today’s Democratic Party— while the classical “liberals” were mostly Republicans. Of course it never mentions that— which is an extremely important point which would show the political atmosphere in the United States through much of the Cold Was era. There are little jabs like that throughout— and as far as I have listened, there is absolutely no mention of the progressive left’s sympathy for Soviet communism which played a major role in the social turmoil of the Cold War period. The omissions may be explained away by the relative lack of depth and narrative style of the podcast, but my guess would be that they are intentionally left-leaning in their point of view. Bottom line, there are better, fairer, and far more comprehensive podcasts that reflect actual historical fact and not historical fiction. I would recommend choosing one of those unless you want “history” over history.

Love the series on propaganda it was very educational. So it makes me wonder what is really considered propaganda? Jerry

High production quality, great use of sound effects, keeps it interesting! However, more importantly, covers history in a way that puts the listener there. Also, points out the “gray areas” of ideology and how ideas steer events. Excellent podcast.

So good. So happy I came across this podcast. The narrator does a fantastic job in grabbing your attention with stories told through the average person’s point of view. If you like history even a lot this is a must listen.
