Amazing Look into an Interesting Story
I was only 12 when Adu was signed by DC United and even though I had no interest in soccer, I remember hearing about Freddy Adu. Living in the US, if you had any interest in sport, it seems that Adu was the big next thing and Grant Wahl dives into how that spotlight on a 14 year old phenom came to be. Great storytelling and definitely recommend this podcast. My favorite moment so far came in episode two with the story about Freddy wanting number 11 when signing with DC United. I loved the initial take from Alecko Eskandarian, who was being asked to give up his jersey number, and how the rest of the team was on his side. It was made a big deal, but when the two players finally met, I loved hearing about how Alecko thought Freddy was great, cheerful, and immediately joked about how he’d have to take the number 9 shirt. It really gave some good perspective on how Freddy was just a kid living his dream and not taking everything too seriously – he was there to have fun.

My favorite bit so far is the fight over the number 11. Says it all about the perils of being so brilliant and having so much on your shoulders. No one could remain unaffected. I’m a football fan so this is a great behind the scenes look at it through the eyes of a child prodigy.

This is a very well done show and it’s great to actually hear Freddy tell his own story along great storytellers.
