Podcast Review
The podcast I listened to for the podcast review assignment is called An Unexpected Podcast: Talkin’ Tolkien. This podcast is brand new and released its first episode on Jan 3, 2018. It has a total of two episodes so far, as the second one was released on Jan 14, 2018. The show is hosted by Lane and Ezra who are both teachers. They were both friends growing up in Ohio, but grew closer in college after they discovered their mutual love of all things Tolkien. Lane didn’t know much about the podcasting world until he heard Ezra on the Rebel Watch: All-Star Wars Podcast and had the idea of creating an all-world Tolkien podcast with him. This podcast is posted every fortnight (two weeks). The podcast is broken into a couple different segments. At the beginning of each episode Lane and Ezra want to start with a segment called quick council where they will talk about how they’re doing and what they have been doing the past two weeks. In their next segment called dropping eves, they will talk about rumours and things that are going on today in Middle-earth. Their final segment is what they call the ‘meat and potatoes’ of their podcast where they analyze readings, writing style, chapters, characters and everything in between in Tolkien’s books. Lane and Ezra are also interested in doing additional episodes which they will call battle for Middle-earth where they will discuss and debate pros and cons of different elements in the universe. For example, in one episode they’re going to compare Frodo Baggins and Bilbo Baggins and debate who the better ring bearer was. The first episode of the podcast is called Many Meetings and it was just an overview of who the hosts are, how they met, what their expectations of the podcast are and what kind of structure we as listeners can expect from them in the podcasts going forward. The second episode is called A Long-Expected Party and in the beginning of quick council they talk about their snow day at school and how they were able to stay home and work on this podcast. On the dropping eves segment, they discussed Amazon’s $250 million purchase of the rights of The Lord of the Rings and what time period they think the new show will take place in. Finally, in the meat and potatoes part of the podcast they start to discuss and analyze chapter one of The Lord of the Rings called A Long-Expected Party. I felt that there was enough content in this podcast to keep me engaged. Obviously, if you aren’t a Lord of the Rings fan then this podcast won’t be for you, but as a fan I found it fun and interesting to listen to. They were able to discuss a whole chapter for a good hour and a half segment. Overall, I like the hosts Lane and Ezra. They seem like down to earth guys that are just doing this podcast for fun in their free time. It is easy to tell that they are both huge fans of Tolkien’s work, which makes this podcast easier to listen to. This podcast is brand new and doesn’t have any advertisements. If the podcast becomes more popular, they could totally get advertising tailored and marketed towards fans of The Lord of the Rings. Although, advertisements might ruin the style and flow of what this podcast is aiming for. In conclusion, I would rate this podcast 3.5/5 stars. This is a brand-new podcast and they’re still trying to figure things out on how they are going to proceed with the show. I thought the first introduction episode was too long and strayed off topic a bit. We did get a sense of who the hosts were, but the episode felt like it dragged on too long. Overall, 3.5/5 stars isn’t bad and An Unexpected Podcast: Talkin’ Tolkien can only improve and get better with each and every show. I look forward to listening to future episodes.

I am so excited about this podcast. I grew up on Harry Potter and love the fantasy world that reflects so much truth of the human experience. Up until about a week ago, I had never read any of the Lord of the Rings trilogy. I can remember reading the Hobbit in middle school and I remember seeing...Read full review »
