So close yet so far
I had set out around a week ago looking for podcasts about a subject that I love dearly yet was very difficult to find other people discussing in any way. The subject in question being, of course, animation. A review show wasn't entirely what I was aiming for to begin with but it was something worth giving a shot. Having watched from the most current episode down to the "best of 2013 podcast" I feel strongly enough about my thoughts on the show to share what I have to say. While I had generally enjoyed what the podcast had to offer it fell short in a few ways that were too common to just let pass by. The hosts can be entertaining though I feel that, for me, Mason's the glue keeping this whole thing together. His knowledge and experiences actually working with animation first hand make for an insightful and interesting perspective on whichever movie of the show they're discussing. It's not that I dislike the other two I just feel what they have to offer can sometimes be a bit off point. The biggest issue I have with the show is the lack of orginization. I personally think it might help to come up with segments to keep things on track. There was many a time they were going through a movie that I had absolutely no idea how they'd gotten from point A to point B in the movie's runtime in the amount of time that they did. Sometimes I get the sense that entire sections of a movie had been looked over. Perhaps breaking up the discussion a bit would help with this. There's a huge bias towards Disney films. I'd like to see where this show goes once the hosts have been over everything Walt's company has to offer. It'd be a nice change of pace to start looking for a wider variety of subjects like animated shows/series or even animated shorts by indipendent producers, students, or even the shorts that come before movies in their own small segments. Not to mention sticking to "family friendly" films leaves them even more limited in topics/shows they could discuss. However that's not really that big of a problem since they mostly cover Western based animation. Though, as I listen through the "Best of 2013" show it's dawning on me that this show really has found the audience it's best suited for. I'm just not a part of it. I don't offer any of this out of spite, in fact, this show winded up making me realize I would like to listen to a show like this. However I'd like to hear it from people that branched out a little bit more and could maintain a good overall flow of commentary with a decent sense of focus. P.S. - Either come up with a rating scale better than numbers or ditch the "review" segment because the scores are so inconsistent that it's laughable. There was a point on the Hercules episode where someone said they didn't like the last third of the movie but still ended up giving it a four star rating. I couldn't stop laughing about it for a good while.Read full review »

But they don’t just express passion for it. They also speak very intelligently about the subject. They are a fun, thoughtful,...Read full review »
