This is a superb podcast covering an impressive range of subjects with exemplary erudition. The presenters are all excellent but I would happily listen to Matthew Sweet even if he was talking about concrete! - his ability to articulate complex ideas with originality and clarity is enviable.

Anne McElvoy is a great presenter in-fact all the team are. Great source of facts.

The Arts & Ideas episode featuring Nicholas Cullinan and Elvira Dyangani Ose on The Frieze/Radio 3 Museum Directors Debate 2023 was a profound exploration of the challenges and future visions for major art museums. The episode shed light on innovative community engagement strategies and the...Read full review »

Of the novels of J. C. Powys I’d read, “Porius” is my favorite… a pure animist marvel. It’s good to see that the man and the work are still being talked about. With due respect, the comment that Powys is not currently in print was mistaken; within the last decade a half dozen titles have become...Read full review »

Lawrence Scott is incredibly banal and his episodes are uninteresting and the questions shallow. Added to this his voice is beyond irritating.

The participants are uniformly leftist and arrogant about their opinions. Readers should know I consider the right is as irksome as the left. It is the arrogance coupled with ignorance that makes this podcast unlistenable.

I really enjoy the breadth of topics discussed, the varied guests, and the new thinking. A refreshing diversity of ages, genders, ethnic backgrounds, and contemporary issues. Perhaps a little dry at times, and still probably a little too middle-class academic to be truly inclusive, but a better...Read full review »

I listen to a lot of podcasts, have been listening to this one for a decade, and it is by far my favorite. It has a stable of rotating interviewers, who are just as smart and interesting as the guests they interview--and the guests are usually scholars, which means they're well-informed...Read full review »

This is surely the best and most improving podcast I listen to, and I listen to quite a lot of podcasts. It does depend a bit on the presenter - to my mind the best are those who have a bit of humour as well as an awe-inspiring breadth of knowledge, like Rana Mitter and Matthew Sweet. But they...Read full review »

Delightfully constructed, beautifully written, and always packed full of great guests with a great range and depth of knowledge and insight. Wonderful. Matthew Sweet presents immaculately, too.

Really good mix of thoughtful articulate informed guests. The interview with Camille Paglia was great EXCEPT when Dodd interrupted her before she finished her thoughts. The audience can’t listen to the guest if the interviewer doesn’t listen himself.

A great program ruined now by repetitive ads. How I detest Mandarin Oriental. If there aim was to foster business well it has spectacularly backfired.

Philip Dodd overworks the word ‘marinaded’. He is incapable of getting through an interview without throwing it in. I find this irritating. I find myself listening out for it as if it’s a codeword in some clandestine wartime broadcast.

Love getting access to this always wonderful podcast- especially from the US. However, whether accuracy was on his side or not - Michael sweets “gotcha” ambush of Naomi Woolf was way offbase and between the standards of the BBC. Very uncomfortable to listen to and not why I subscribe.

Wide ranging topics and ideas with different presenters who all bring something to the shows. Shahida Bari has some crazy smarts and is delightfully charming too. I hope to see her on BBC4 one day with her own show. A face for Radio she has, not.

I find this podcast to be a little bit and miss, but the Philip Dodd episodes are generally the most intellectually stimulating. They have a knack for tapping into the zeitgeist, and coming up with surprising and sometimes daring ways of thinking about culture today.

I really enjoyed the podcast on Stan and Laurel...As a preteen and teenager 40 years ago l watched the reruns of some of their comedy’s...Thank you for explaining their histories. It made me understand their unique personalities and how they clinched together throughout their careers in show biz.

As an artist I listen to many podcasts and this one of my favorites. Ever diverse subject matter is discussed in a civil way between thoughtful, intelligent people who are, generally, authorities in the particular subject at hand. In an age of pitbull mentality discourse, it is particularly...Read full review »

Extremely intelligent and opinionated interviews with artists, writers, and thinkers. Philip Dodd is unafraid to ask difficult and uncomfortable questions, and the other hosts (with the exception of the glib Rana Mitter) are almost as proficient at communicating complex ideas clearly.

Philip Dodd does not conduct an interview he just pushes points he believes in and concedes nothing. He interrupts often, he is dismissive and laughs in a patronising way very often when the guest makes a point.
