Interesting source of good information, needs a little polish
I started listening to the team around 2-3 months ago and I've found the technical information being provided around drones and general UAV operations being of really high quality. Being from Australia some of the USA specifics may not be applicable but the underlying concepts are the same and it's been very helpful with a number of items. While a lot of the content also is specific to DJI, I think this is due to DJI being the defacto standard in consumer to professional drones and not so much to do with DroneU. Where I think this podcast falls down is unfortuntately where the personal opinions of Paul override reason on occasion. The latest episode was an example of this, where 15 minutes were spent painting the picture of something being bad based on a question asked, only for the actual answer to be that it is completely legal (talking about supervised flying for a Part 107). Another example is hearing his story about him reporting tourists on the beach for flying illegally, but then telling everybody to ignore people doing things illegal and just worry about what you're doing yourself. On a personal level I think there could be more embracement of automation, being a manned commercial license holder I can completely understand the need to learn to fly without it, but there is a place for it as well. Saying that operators are not "real pilots" because they use automation to their advantage when it is reasonable is like saying that airline pilots aren't "real pilots" because they fly on autopilot most of the flight. 3 stars for this one, knocking one off for the sometimes conflicting information and another for the angry rants that sometimes take up more of the episode than answering the actual question. Perfect companion to go with an actual DroneU subscription, technical information is always solid and the news keeps you up to date.Read full review »
