“It starts with alternative facts…otherwise known as lies. Without any evidence in fact contrary to evidence a “big lie” takes hold. Trump started with the “birther lie.” Arguably he rode that lie all the way into the White House as conspiracy theories replaced rational thinking. If there are no objective facts then the very foundations of democracy is questioned and “truth” becomes whatever the “leader” wants it to be.
Whatever benefits him. And embracing and repeating blatantly false claims becomes the litmus test for loyalty. More terrifying to me than Trump’s takeover of Congress and the Judiciary is the example of Maricopa County Arizona and the lengths he was willing to go, the lies he was willing to tell, the lives he was and remains willing to destroy to tear out democracy at the grass roots, a county election board.
Calmly, logically and thoughtfully, this podcast takes you through the process of how democracies give way to authoritarian rule. While we have been distracted by the ranting and whining and an attempted coup by a wanna be despot for eight years, his backers and supporters have with well organized propaganda campaigns and lots of money moved us closer to autocracy.”
