Everyone should be listening to it who cares about democracy and how it dies.

anything i might want to say has been said. this is needful information. and yes, it belongs in high school civics classes (if they still exist and haven’t gone the way of the dodo and beowulf studies).

Pairs well with American Crisis pod.

I truly wish this podcast was required listening for everyone in North America. It’s so well done, so measured, shocking without that being the aim, and sobering.

I echo everyone else’s sentiments about having to wait a week between episodes. Aside from that, you have a fantastic series, covering issues that are imperative to the survival of democracy. I am thoroughly captivated and longingly await the next episode.

This series is very well done. It provides historical background & information showing its relation to current political environment. Recommended for those who are interested in learning more about what has gotten us to this point in our politics.

It’s always a pleasure reading or listening to Anne Applebaum, this podcast is no exception.

This should be required listening in all high school history and civics classes (if civics classes even still exist).

This is an intelligent, thoughtful and honest education in current events backed up with historical fact and insight. Anne Applebaum’s voice is clear and devoid of affect, making her very easy to listen to and understandable. I am a discerning and tough audience and I love this show.

… if we can still hear news and information like this. But we cannot assume this right won’t be swept away, too. If you don’t want this to happen here, you can’t just listen to great podcasts like this and sit on the sidelines. We are only helpless if we decide to be.

This is an outstanding podcast. This should be mandatory listening for every American.

Anne Applebaum and Peter Pomerantsev have created a podcast that could not be more timely or essential. It dives deep into the frightening rise of authoritarianism in 🇺🇸, revealing that the slide toward autocracy isn’t some distant concern—it’s happening now. Through their sharp insights and...Read full review »

I have listened so far to the first three episodes Lots of great information do wish they could have a tad bit more information on this matter but I think you should continue with this conversation for a while and maybe more examples from history Thanks Heather Davis

Excellent podcast by people able and willing to do the research. Complex problems are explained clearly. The next question is: can complicit politicians be trusted again?

Anne and Peter are National Treasures - more accurately International Treasures!. They have taught our family so very much about politics in the modern world. Do not miss their insights. Read everything they write.

Essential listening for anyone who values our democracy and way of life. Unfortunately, those who need to hear it most will reject it as propaganda and lies out of fealty to the cult.

A chilling, accessible and comprehensive account of how autocratic regimes take hold, and how that is currently happening in the USA.

This is a really compelling show, hosted by Anne Applebaum (one of my all time favorite historians and writers) and Peter Pomerantsev from Johns Hopkins. It’s so well researched and produced and gives a good historical perspective while shining a light on what is happening today. So many ways in...Read full review »

As a Canadian retired history teacher, I'm gobsmacked learning how often Democratic constitutions are under attack and how unable citizens appear to stop it. I have little faith in society to protect democracy than ever before. My faith rests in learning history where pathways for resistance...Read full review »

I’ve been following Anne Applebaum for some time. As someone who studied propaganda and the Soviet Union and spent time in post-communist Poland, I’ve appreciated her sharp and insightful writing about developments in the region. I never thought that authoritarian red flags would be relevant to...Read full review »

Ever wonder why certain politicians can claim it’s pitch black out and raining at 12 noon on a sunny day and his supporters will repeat the lie? This is a wonderful and super well produced analysis of our current political moment in the United States. Explains so much. HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

Keep an open mind. Whether you vote for Democrats or Republicans does not matter. The most important pillar of democracy is allowing everyone to vote in free, fair and open elections. Imagine living in our country without labels or party alliances. Most Americans have more in common than we want...Read full review »

This is most important US political topic of our day. The writers and editors of the Atlantic are heroes of democracy and are on the front lines of the fight against Donald Trump and his fascist adherents. THANK YOU!

Informative and entertaining podcast, based on fact, and delivered very well. If you want to understand what is going on in America and throughout the world, read history and listen to this podcast. Technology changes, tactics don’t.

In the first episode you fell down a well known rabbit hole. Though ignored why that rabbit hole was created. Instead went with the main stream media narrative and blamed it on Trump. Your lack of motivation to do research for yourself, was spotlighted when you mentioned a world event. I...Read full review »

The first episode was wonderful. After reading ‘Gulag,’ I started following Anne Applebaum. I am curious to see how this progressed. Unearthed effectively by Anne Applebaum. Nice dry sense of humour, meaty topics, pragmatic viewpoints, awaking to reality without becoming fearful. This is good listening!

So far, this podcast is fantastic and important for as many people to hear as possible. However, the music that is added at various times diminishes the seriousness of the topic. You don’t need music to make it more exciting or more emotional, it just diminishes the production and impact.

I can only hope that somewhere, somehow, the very people who need to hear this can or will— and not those of us self-selecting to hear truth. I hold out little hope for today but can only have hope for tomorrow— your next podcast should be on nationwide cult de-programming. Is it too late?
