Good podcast but hire an investigator
Genuinely good podcast. Worth listening to. But the investigational skills are weaker than the story. They do a good job of investigating all sides of the story. But certain parts of Cocos story are just obviously fantastical. The interesting part is that she obviously had something happen to her. Obviously something happened to this person for her to be so profoundly damaged. And so I was very excited to hear that they got in touch with the mother and were trying to figure out what really happened. And they did find out some interesting information about abuse that seems to have happened to her at a young age. But of course there are other really critical questions. What was her mother like? Was she abusive? Did she know about the abuse? It’s certainly possible that she’s an innocent victim. But long story short the podcasters decided to specifically investigate whether coco’s entire story might be true. They spent significant time and effort on investigating (and disproving) the claim that the mother sold her into sex slavery (fair enough, that was her whole story) but also the claim that her mother secretly ritually murdered her sister, and possibly other children… Later when they get her brother on the phone they get three questions to ask. That’s it. From someone who could shed enormous light on everything. And they had specifically planned these long in advance. 1. Was she sold into sex slavery (no, of course not), 2. Was she forced to murder her sister (uhh… no)? 3. Was she sexually abused by a boyfriend of the mother (maybe). Wow. Really? Couldn’t replace the question about the sister with “was your mother abusive to coco?” “What was it like growing up in that house?” I mean literally anything else. Jesus. And then they have the first name, ex partner, and multiple former addresses for the accused abuser. No dice, they asked around and because of German privacy laws it was too hard so they gave up. What!? Hire a PI! Like either you know your stuff and can get this done yourself or outsource it. I feel like they genuinely are great storytellers but it just feels like they aren’t the best investigative reporters. Which is fine. But just hire someone to do that part!

I was enjoying this podcast until episode 5 which made me weary with the “far right” references and Donald Trump mentions. Then Episode 6 solidified it for me. The constant statements of trafficking conspiracy as if this isn’t an actual problem is what damages and hurts victims in the long run...Read full review »
