Interesting but slightly careless
It was a really interesting podcast but often made me question when journalism becomes harassment. The journalists failed to reflect meaningfully on their own actions and lacked empathy at points. If this was a case of MbP, then surely Jean has her own issues that need dealing with. Relentlessly pursuing with accusations is not the way to encourage her to seek help. Further, the nitpicking about what procedures are necessary, what constitutes illness and whether or not someone “looks sick” is commented upon without as if that’s all perfectly fine and acceptable behaviour. While the sleuths were right in this case, these kinds of incidents further stigmatise chronically ill people and encourage others to interrogate them. The same happens in doctors offices, where many who are chronically ill, particularly women and other marginalised groups, struggle to be taken seriously and have their concerns addressed. Overall I enjoyed the podcast but wish the journalists had reflected more and approached the case with greater empathy.

How on earth did this happen? Fascinating podcast, read the article then binged the podcast in 1 sitting, lots of gullible people taken in, from sympathetic members of the public to health professionals. Well written and clearly narrated, excellent listen. DJM

The issue of Munchausen by Proxy is so rarely covered with such compassion and diligence. An excellent, compelling show that centers the humanity of everyone involved
