Good but left leaning
Great idea, worth listing to but this podcast isn't brave enough to get deep into the issues and challenge the status quo with its liberal leanings. I suspect this is to woo the young listeners (I am one, but feel a little patronised). We need more thorough material where people are invited to see other perspectives. Only in this informed context can fake news be avoided and stereotypes be challenged. Some examples; In 'Whose helping teachers with tough kids' isn't it legitimate to consider that parents play a crucial role? Instead there was was no analysis on whether state funding was less per pupil than historically or whether other variables were at play (changes in society due to technology, immigration, less 'traditional family structures' etc). Instead the problem was simplified as if government cuts were the whole of the problem. In 'How has #metoo changed American politics' - a great topic - it was taken for granted that the movement was unanimously good. There was no discussion about whether it was a good thing that people should be 'guilty until proven innocent' etc. Unfortunately this type of journalism is part of a wider problem with the BBC, who struggle to understand their own biases.Read full review »

More reviews of Beyond Today
What I love about Today in the broadsheet depth. Unfortunately this is more beyond breakfast TV rather than beyond Today.

Fantastic. Easy to listen to while addressing the full spectrum of issues. As a long time listener of BBC’s The Inquiry and also NPR’s Planet Money and The Indicator, amongst others, this is right up there. Keep going, please.
