Never lost the smooth
Beyond Yacht Rock is approaching its third year and while the podcast's days are numbered, the show is better than ever. The podcast's premise is creating new musical genres and determining whether songs are Yacht or Nyacht (the only definitive guide to the wildly misunderstood genre), but the show's real charm is the chemistry and genuine friendship between JD, Hunter, Steve and Dave. The show rewards regular listening as the hosts trade barbs and personal stories over an eclectic mix of music that is connected in some way. It's consistently funny, interesting and wholly unique. The show will end after episode 100 (with an unnamed project to come) and I'm already mourning its loss. BYR has really hit its stride in the last year. There is a warmth between the four guys and the exchanges between them feel more natural than ever. The most recent episode at the time of this review is "Leah Songs," a sincerely beautiful tribute to JD's late wife. It carries even more emotional weight after listening to the show for years and hearing tidbits about Leah and the life she and JD made together. The episode was something of an aberration on a podcast that often prefers silliness to sincerity, but it captures the kind of deep bond shared by the hosts. It's the kind of connection we all want for ourselves. Yacht Rock, the original web series, remains one of the Internet's funniest and unintentionally insightful creations. It created a musical genre that others have profited from and misunderstood, but these four guys are the genuine article. I get excited every time I see a new episode. The show has managed to make me laugh and cry. I am currently making my second run through the show and I know I'm not alone in missing the show before it's gone. Beyond Yacht Rock is well worth your time, whether you're seeing this during its run or after it has concluded. Here's to hoping it doesn't leave us before exploring Hunter's oft-cited Yachtsco genre. Either way, thank you for the hours of laughs, vulnerability in sharing some deeply personal stories and bringing Bill LaBounty into my life. I'll be there for whatever is next. BYR forever.Read full review »

This podcast deserves 5 stars for the Giallo / Italian horror soundtracks episode alone! I'm looking forward to future oddball musical genre countdowns. Keep up the awesome work, guys!Read full review »

This is one of the best podcasts that I’ve heard in ages! Every week I rediscover something I forgot! This podcast proves that Michael McDonald is the center of the universe because he is involved in every genre they discuss every week - even Van Halen. I love this podcast!
