“Audrey Gillan has done a terrific job at unpacking the many flaws running through the investigation and reporting of this notorious case. She has diligently sought to highlight the overarching misogyny and judgement of the police reports which suggested that the women were somehow culpable in the way they met their deaths. She also seeks to recompense them for this judgement.
Using her journalistic skills, she succeeds in showing us the women beyond the grim newspaper photos, giving us a glimpse into their lives and the lives of the families they left behind. In doing so she succeeds in her aim of redressing the narrative around the events that led to their terrible deaths. Lives that can be documented and validated, unlike the eponymous killer, of whom we have no such insight, having never been identified.
I have just listened to Episode 5, detailing the events around the murder of Helen Puttock, just a 15 minute walk away from my home. I have also just realised that i listened to this episode on 31st October. The very date she was murdered back in 1969 !”
