Is it worth it?
It feels like half the actual audio is adverts. I get it: the show was expensive to make with all this high profile personnel, but this is ridiculous. What’s more ridiculous is the ads for the very show you’re listening to… adception if you will. If you have the patience to actually listen to enough of the bloody thing to have an idea of what’s going on, you’ll discover crumbs of an interesting story scattered in a landscape of achingly trite cultural talking points, fisher price’s my first take on a 40 year old alternative subculture, and of course the narrator tediously making her way through all the places she used to go to. On this last part, one gets a sense of an individual still desperate for validation. I guess some people never grow out of that. So… it’s an interesting story if you can handle the cringe.

The amount of ads was absurd. And based off the reviews I’ve read, I am not alone in that thought. I really loved the podcast other than that. It felt so insensitive and garish. Penelope Spheeris slays though. So stoked to hear her and hope to hear more of her in the future. With less ads.

I was thirteen in 1957 and my mother and I went to Havana. The Tropicana was incredible with the show girls coming down ramps through the Palm Trees. Described just like it was.
