Like The Mentalists
This show is a bit like a superior, podcast version of the TV show The Mentalists. The two main characters 'Lee' and 'Josh' (apologies, I could not find the actor names) are middle aged men bound together by a niche obsession with rugby, with Josh even taking an interest in the latest kits. The relationship is generally one of camaraderie, but there is also a bit of a Steptoe & Son vibe, with the two men bound together by fear, loneliness, and the isolation of their obsession. The actors nail the parts as humbug Yorkshire and and dour Welsh respectively, and the writing is incredibly sharp, capturing the freewheeling, tangent filled nature of in depth discussions on obscure topics. I would suggest starting from the beginning as by the middle episodes the series contains a lots of in-jokes and self references. The actual rugby knowledge is fairly limited but I assume accurate, although there are a few hilarious Ali G style interviews where you have to guess whether the special guest is in on the joke. The format can occasionally be frustrating, with episodes not only very long but varying in length individually. It is also pretty slow burn, with details about the characters personal lives only dripping out very gradually - but ultimately this languid pace is part of what makes is such a treat. Hopefully future episodes will expand the format and really start to amp up the tension.Read full review »

The chemistry between Lee and Josh results in a very funny but never over long discussion of rugby, which even touches on Scotland on occasion-the use of the Taggart theme was especially appreciated.

A slow start but coming together nicely. The addition of a co-host was very good. Good/S**t ratings are always great and the pod is establishing itself in the former.

The hosts have a good knowledge of the game and raise some interesting points about rugby which gets you thinking. Sometimes I agree with them, sometimes not, which is what makes it worth listening to. Having said that, they can be a bit too snide sometimes and I get the impression that they...Read full review »
