Smarmy and self righteous
I have been listening to the book riot podcast for a few months now. I can say that the only consistent thing is that the hosts are smug and self-righteous. I have listened because the books they review and the news that they share I have found generally interesting. But after listening to today's podcast, I have reached my limit and it is not a forgivable amount of disagreement with their opinions. While they purport to want to see diversity in books, what they really want is a complete overhaul without respecting the skills and knowledge of the people who work in this field already. When Rebecca today indicated that she was "less than disinterested" about where reviewers from major publications are coming from, she basically said that only the opinions of people from her age range and younger who access the Internet and social media in those ways are worthwhile. Clearly the reviewer from the major publication was indicating an interest in making his reviews more relevant to readers of book reviews. To acknowledge that olive branch and offer suggestions for more effective ways to solve this problem in a positive constructive way, would have been showing an interest in growing everyone's knowledge. Given that this was right on the heels of her discussions of diversity in other ways, I find her opinions disingenuous and biased. That, of course, wouldn't be a problem except for the fact that she represents those views as unbiased. I recently unsubscribed from Dear book nerd for a similar problem. I have enjoyed many of the blog posts at book riot. But this podcast represents an unfortunate side of the creators of that blog.Read full review »
