“I just listened to the Chuck Klosterman interview. I found it a little embarrassing to listen to two forty-something year old writers deconstructing Miley Cyrus’ and Lady Gaga’s authenticity as though it were somehow important or interesting.
Ellis comes off as a narcissistic troll who obsesses over Twitter and slams other much respected authors. It’s actually a bit grotesque to hear him extolling the virtues of Miley and the Kardashians while he expresses contempt for J.D. Salinger, David Foster Wallace, and Alice Munro.
I’m not sure if they’re completely serious when they discuss Taylor Swift, Jennifer Lawrence, et al or if they’re practicing some sort of meta-cultural criticism that’s over my head. Either way, I guess this podcast is not for me because I really can’t see the value in dissecting idiotic popular culture and celebrity. I don’t give a fig about that sort of stuff when there is quality art, writing, music, and film out there to be absorbing and discussing.”
