“...but a series of difficult circumstances through my life (mainly caused by a church that has a very similar mindset to Hillsong) brought me to a much closer understanding of who God is and how He works. The Bible is our reference point, not great music, not a fantastic lightshow, not designer suits or the latest fashions, and certainly not the newest car or biggest house. Yet, it is these kind of things that Hillsong constantly elevate at the expense of finding practical applications of God's Word that aren't just about feelings or trying harder. I have worked in the media (TV) for over 20 years and one of the slyest tools of the enemy - celebrity culture - is the one that Hillsong is soaked in now as a result of its monetary success. And unfortunately this has rubbed off on its leadership. Folks, nothing good we do is ever possible without leaning on God first. I'm sure there are some great sincere people at Hillsong who truly want to serve God, but they need to stop looking at the world to define what's successful. Sure, traditionalism is religious, but materialism and idolatry are equally dangerous to stop God from working in our lives fully. A few times over the last 17 years I was in Sydney and went to Hillsong - last time I went I wondered what had ever attracted me to that kind of service/teaching. Ask yourself, if Jesus lived on earth today, would He go to Hillsong as a regular? Honest answer, please.”Read full review »
