“I love listening to this podcast from my home in France where, of course, I’m also able to enjoy watching current races with excellent commentary by none other than Jacques Villeneuve. And after that seamless plug I have another ‘what if’ question. This is relates to 1988 which is technically not the V10 era but seeing as there were 3.5L V8’s involved I hope you’ll allow it.
Suppose in 1988 Mclaren had gone with their original choice and signed Nelson Piquet to partner Alain Prost. How would a Piquet/Prost partnership have shaken out? Would Nelson have been able to challenge Prost or would Prost have dominated Piquet? Would Alain have stayed at Mclaren and not gone to Ferrari in 1990? Would Williams have taken Nakajima to keep Honda engines or perhaps would Frank have taken Senna 6 years earlier and might we have had a Senna/Mansell Williams rivalry? And if Williams had kept the Honda engines would they have been able to beat the McLaren steamroller in 88-91? Would we have had a Williams/McLaren Prost/Piquet/Mansell/Senna fight into the 90’s?”
