Great concept, great stories, great interviews but the whole experience is devalued by the interruption of the childish humour which only distracts from the real story. Replace the presenters or reign them in to just telling the real story extremely well.

I find it annoying that it’s edited to sound like Alice and Matt are actually sitting across from one another doing this Podcast and they ARE NOT. It’s obvious, it’s distracting, annoying and frankly insulting. I’ve actually stopped listening because of this.

Good podcast and interest g stuff. Only to be let down by the increasing silly jokes interrupted by the non narrator. Ok the odd one is fine but to keep interrupting the sorry is just far too much. I’m gripped one minute then rolling my eyes the next looking to fast forward his crap humour. Sure...Read full review »

Could do without the woke lectures thanks. Just stick to the day job.

Matt and Alice are such hilarious, comedic and extremely talented storytellers. Their choice of material to cover is fabulous. The witty, self deprecating and tongue in cheek jibes to each other make the show. Masterclass. Total mic drop I run to my phone every Wednesday. Great job guys.

I really enjoy the stories and detail they go into but they ‘jokes’ and interjections from the hosts make it a hard listen.

Alice and Matt bring this show to life; while many of the topics aren’t stories I’m normally drawn to, the way they’re written and produced really captures my attention and interest. Just finished the Boris series and again, I would normally not click on a podcast about him but Matt did such a...Read full review »

These Hosts are superb together, I love the little jokes that pop up especially in the crazy canoe one, anyone that thinks that it takes away from the story needs to grow a sense of humour! Keep up the good work. Oh and Alice is hot. Sorry.

I love the topics and also the telling of the topics, humour in every episode but also sensitive when needed. Favourite to date is ‘the man, the wife and a canoe’ (or similar title) just brill!

Like the storytelling and information, but hate the jokes, sounds scripted and too try hard, just very unfunny. Especially when Alice tried to be jokey...ughh.

Gave up half way through the first episode of the Profumo affair.. had the potential for a well narrated story I felt was ruined by the constant silly jokes and over talking breaking up the story.

This is an entertaining and educating podcast that covers a broad range of topics. I particularly enjoyed Murdoch and Darwin. But please, stop the accents. None of us reflects well with them.

I'm currently listening to the excellent series about Paul Gascoigne. Gazza can only be described as a thoroughly useless and pathetic individual. He's clearly never considered anybody but himself. It baffles me how Matt clearly idolises the guy.Read full review »

The fickle non sensical and scripted one liners from the non narrating host completely ruins this podcast, which if researched and presented properly could be brilliant .

Love this podcast! Alice and Matt do an excellent job at keeping your attention, the writers and producers also get 5 stars! Thanks for filling my head with such interesting stories.

Levine and Forde have evolved the “X tells Y a story about history” format. The series are well-researched: even the stories I’m familiar with I’ve learned new things. And the banter between the two is on point: they’re sharply witty but without taking themselves seriously.
Lemonitus via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 05/02/23
Matt and Alice do a great double act on the faked death of the canoe man. Their banter has me in hysterics - especially when telling of John’s inability to stay hidden or even worse - his ever more desperate ‘great ideas’. The Barings Bank series was fascinating insight to a memorable scandal -...Read full review »

Best story telling ever. As an American I haven’t heard most of these stories before so it keeps me on edge. But honestly, I’m just here for Matt’s giggle.

Brilliant. Amazing. Original. Well done all. Matt - is a comic/impressionist genius and Alice, well, words fail :) Yes, keep them coming.

As Brit now living in Australia I love listening to British Scandal. I worked in a bank at the time of the train robbery and some of our money was on board. It was shock and horror at work. In the “The Third Man” episode, just as Philby found himself in the bowls of the smelly ship that is helping him to escape to the Soviet Union, and as he feels the loneliness and desperation of his new life, wondering if his spying was all worth it, happily the ad that breaks in is for online...Read full review »

The writing of this Cambridge Spies series seems rather under-researched. For example, the account of Burgess’ part in the defection of himself and Maclean. The several references to him expecting and needing to return to Washington, and finding himself in Moscow totally by surprise, are just...Read full review »

I loved the first few seasons, 5 stars, my fave podcast ever. What made it unique was the lighthearted improv interjections from the presenter who isn’t narrating, and the humour that follows. And we know who done it! The only odd thing about this podcast is how the hosts seem to be having such a great time joking around. It is an odd note to somethings so terrifyingly awful. And it’s not as if the story really needed comic entertainment since the story is a riveting real life...Read full review »

Such a great series. Maybe the 30 year sentences reflect the fact Driver Mills was so badly injured by these thugs he never worked again. Feels this unpleasant aspect was glossed over in this particular storytelling.
