In praise of Buddhist Geeks
I’m glad to have a chance to praise Buddhist Geeks. Without exaggerating, I can say that listening to their podcasts changed my life for the better. For twenty years prior to hearing their first program, I was a serious practitioner of Tibetan Buddhism … so impressed by the Dalai Lama that I never strayed from the fold or the instructions. Tibetan Buddhism says that the student must be able to hold a meditation image for hours (Shamata) before attempting Vipassana (Insight). After hearing interviews with Insight practitioners and teachers, I gave it a try. To my surprise, it was like coming home...finally! The point is that the Buddhist Geeks interview all the major Buddhist figures, giving the listener a chance to hear their unscripted point of view. As a result, they are all interesting in different ways. As an example, the most current interview is with Jeffrey Hopkins. I was amazed to realize that Jeffrey was extremely playful and very pleasant because my mental concepts concerning him were so different...from his early translations for the Dalai Lama, I had pictured him as an overly educated and totally up tight academic. Wrong again! Everyone following a spiritual path should listen to Buddhist Geeks for the different points of view. It’s guaranteed that you’ll learn things you never knew.Read full review »
