“Cane and rinse is by far the best piece of artistic journalism and critique I have ever witnessed and here is why.
I discovered it last year while I was spending WAY TOO MUCH time in my car because of work.
[Oh, by the way, this is the part where I talk about my life, feel free to skip this part at any time, I’ll put a note when it ends.]
I’m a musician and last year was a pretty busy year for me. Too busy, in fact, because I was spending most of my free time driving from one venue to another, or from one music school to another.
I was in a nostalgic mood and needed to hear some people talk about the Metal Gear series. I found Cane and rinse and devoured all the metal gear shows. I listened to EVERY.EPISODE.TWICE. that’s how much time I had to spend in the car.
[THAT’S THE PART WHERE THE REVIEW BEGINS]
But it isn’t nostalgia that made me fall in love with your work. Cane and Rinse is something I have been looking for in journalism for years.
I used to work as a music journalist for a few years. Eventually I left because I hated what this job was doing to my coworkers. As the popularity of our website grew, they were falling in love with their own opinion and analysis. They were starting to think that their opinion was better.
Being paid for giving your opinion on art is something that really bothers me. For years I naively dreamt of a medium where you could debate on art by just sharing your experiences without trying to convince everyone that you are right.
And this is what you do at Cane and Rinse. You share, you listen to each other, you don’t judge and there is no distance or hierarchy between you and the correspondents. Plus, you do that without that infuriating false modesty some critics have. You know, those who start a sentence with « I respect your opinion, but… ».
There is one sentence in your the Deus Ex : Human Revolution episode that really stroke me and that perfectly encapsulates what I mean : « you can measure the love you have for a game by looking at how much you are able to forgive its flaws ».
And for that, from the bottom of my heart, thank you and please keep going.”
