By study AND by the Spirit
The hosts of this podcast are religious scholars from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. They are very open and clear about this and the importance of using scholarship to strengthen one’s faith. They are clearly biased in sharing their views and beliefs, however, they also adamant about the importance of each of us doing our own research. They provide this podcast as a tool to help our research and scholarly thought processes. They emphasize the importance of objective, critical analysis when doing scholarly research. This podcast is valuable in demonstrating that we don’t have to be afraid of historical facts. It helps to pull the church of Christ out of mystical realms, places it back onto practical foundations. The guests are world renowned as experts in their fields of study. They have gone deeper into their scholastic studies of these topics than many of us are capable of. The hosts have openly stated that their guests are more knowledgeable than the hosts. These guests, with all of their specialized knowledge, are still faithful and devout members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Some of the negative comments about this podcast accuse the hosts of being “apologists”. They are clearly not apologists. Rather, they simply provide the facts and evidences of the church’s history, claims, and operations. They unapologetically share their own thoughts and allow the guests/experts provide answers to listeners questions. As well as their training on how to more accurately/affectively look at history, they emphasize the importance of personal spiritual experiences. Jesus taught, “Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar’s and render unto God that which is God’s.” (Matt 22:15-22) History is always preserved by mortals who are limited by their own imperfect thoughts and emotions. No matter how well-meaning they are, they are only capable of seeing what they can see. Because of the limitations the world shapes into our perceptions and understandings, we need something more than the world can give us in order to understand eternal truths and greater insight into the eternal plan of God. Jesus taught us how live in a way that would enable us to draw on the powers of heaven. He promised that if we followed His way we would have access to the Holy Spirit as a comforter, guide, and teacher. One of the Holy Spirit’s primary roles is to testify of truth. Without the spiritual component, truth seekers will always come up short. The scriptures give repeated promises to the sincere truth seekers. God wants us to know and understand everything, but he is never going to force us to seek what he has to offer. It will always be our own individual choice. Something to keep in mind, is that a sincere seeker is not looking for a gotcha. He is not looking to prove anyone wrong or right. He just wants to understand and is willing to do the work to gain that understanding. He is willing to study and ponder the light God has already sent into the world to build foundations on which to grow. He will keep an open heart and an open mind, allowing the Holy Spirit to guide his understanding of the things he is studying and how to apply the knowledge he acquires.

More reviews of Church History Matters
They bring up some thorny points about each issue but leave out a lot of others. I learn something from most episodes, but a lot of it feels like weak rationalization. They never claim to be unbiased, but they also aren’t willing to be critical of the Church—which seems a little disingenuous.
