Today’s is a special episode of the podcast. As you recall, we started a Spotlight Series here, where I spend time talking to individuals who are changemakers in the community. People who are actively participating in advocacy and making a difference in matters SRHR and related mental health. The focus is on them, the organizations they’re created and the powerful difference they are making in people’s lives on a day-to-day basis.
It’s my absolute honor to introduce the iconic Njeri Migwi, Executive Director of Usikimye, an organization working towards ending the prevalence of sexual and gender-based violence (GBV) and Femicide in Kenya. Sitting down with Njeri gave me an opportunity to learn a bit about her and exactly what motivated her to start Usikimye. We also discuss the amazing work the organization is doing to ensure the safety of everyday Kenyans.
Njeri Migwi is an intersectional feminist, a Woman Human Rights Defender, and the Executive Director /Co-founder of Usikimye, a grassroots organization that works against Sexual and Gender Based Violence. Since co-founding Usikimye, Njeri has led the organization’s work on gender equality, including coordinating prevention, response, accountability work on violence against women and girls, by establishing three safe houses for survivors, a toll-free emergency line and a feeding program in Soweto that mitigates the effects of SGBV on vulnerable children and Women.
