On this episode, I am joined by Dr. Kizzie Shako, a Forensic Medical Practitioner, Sexual & Gender Based Violence (SGBV) Expert. Together, we tackle a very difficult topic, and a trigger warning is necessary due to references to sexual assault, violence and trauma. Our intention is to inform and empower by sharing professional perspectives together with tools and resources available to survivors specifically in our Kenyan context.

What services are available to survivors to prevent long term physical and psychological effects? How does one go about reporting the incident and what is done to best preserve evidence to bring the perpetrator to book? Dr. Kizzie Shako is a Forensic Medical Practitioner, director of ESCAPE Forensic Consultancy, a Science for Justice Advocate & Human Rights Defender. She worked in the forensics and pathology services department at the Ministry of Health for 12 years after which she was posted at the police surgery as a police doctor where she dealt with devastating cases of SGBV affecting both adults and children. She is now an SGBV advisor to the Office of the Chief Justice.
