S3 Ep3 | A death every 40seconds: Highlighting Suicide as a Global Crisis
Listen now
Description
In honor of Suicide Prevention Month this September, today’s episode comes with a ⚠️trigger warning ⚠️ as we focus on mental health and suicide; its risk factors, causes, signs to look out for and ways to prevent it. The statistics are alarming—according to WHO, one person takes their life every forty seconds, with the majority of them being young people. As hard as this conversation may be, it’s a much-needed reminder that we can all play a role in creating a safer, more supportive world for those of us who are struggling. Today, I'm joined by Leila Kisiah, Executive Director and Founder of Mending Minds Foundation, and Mukimba Rahedi, a dedicated mental health expert. Together we share critical strategies for suicide prevention and emphasize the importance of building capacity among those on the frontlines—professionals, gatekeepers, first responders, and advocates. We also delve into the significance of self-care, particularly as a simple yet powerful tool for maintaining your mental health. As Rahedi says in the episode, “if your self-care starts to feel like folding a fitted bedsheet, then you need to take a step back and reevaluate.” This Suicide Prevention Month, let’s come together to spread awareness, offer hope, and remind everyone that they are not alone. Mending Minds Foundation is an organisation committed to the wellness of individuals, communities and organisations through Mental Health awareness, Promotion, Prevention and Empowerment Programmes.
