short, shallow, vacuous, disappointing
When a big flashy media org like A&E steps into the true crime podcasting genre, people might expect a really excellent product. However, A&E has not done its homework, and what it has made will disappoint people who have become accustomed to Serial (s1), Up and Vanished, Crimetown, Someone Knows Something, and perhaps the archetypal true crime podcast, Casefile True Crime. SPOILERS for the 1st episode of Cold Case Files below. What Casefile True Crime and the other podcasts mentioned do or have that Cold Case Files does not do or lacks: - length (it's a podcast! it can be as long as its content deserves) - depth - analysis, often with experts - context about how the crime affected the town and the family Cold Case Files' 1st episode presents the story of a teenager's murder as briefly as possible. It gets to the point so quickly that you don't even have time to become curious. Their very first cold case has a fabulously unexpected twist ending, but you won't realize how weird it is until an hour or so after listening to the show...because they dash through the details so fast. This is a super disappointing and lame podcast.Read full review »

I can't wait for these episodes. They will pull you in and you want to find out what happened but also you don't want it to end. It's amazing.Read full review »

Writing and storytelling feels sophomoric, half baked and without any mystery. Prefer to have my murder tales not told by what sounds like an 11 year old girl.
