The best podcast
Conflicted: A History Podcast from Zach Cornwell is a hidden gem and undoubtedly one of the finest history podcasts out there. Zach tackles complex and controversial subjects with great balance, objectivity and sensitivity. He is able to bring historical issues to life by exploring the viewpoints of individuals involved in these conflicts whilst still giving the listener a wider understanding of the historical period in each episode. Zach is always careful to point out that he is only scratching the surface and that there are other ways of looking at the issues that he raises in each episode - but I feel he is always thorough and balanced in his presentation throughout the episode. He also has a rare gift of being able to present each topic in a warm, engaging and friendly manner whilst at the same time maintaining a professional and nuanced approach to subjects which are often sensitive and delicate to people today. The episodes are thought provoking and really shine a light on our understanding (or lack of) of conflicts in the past and help to explain why they still matter to us today. I have particularly enjoyed the miniseries which go into greater detail - such as the Afghan/Soviet war, the Third temple war and “Kill Yamamoto: the Mission to avenge Pearl Harbour”, amongst others. As someone who has always been interested in classical and medieval history I was sceptical whether I would enjoy these topics. It is testament to Zach’s amazing presentation skills and thorough research that these are among the most enjoyable and engaging podcast episodes I’ve ever listened to. This is a truly phenomenal podcast series which is sadly underrated and I wish for many more episodes in the future and many hours of listening.
