Description
Realising she'd never be promoted into leadership roles due to her identity, Furkan Karayel quit her dream career as a software engineer in Ireland and began her mission of educating organisations on authentic workplace inclusion and diversity.
A multi-award-winning diversity and inclusion speaker, and best-selling author of the book “Inclusive Intelligence", Furkan states that "diversity" and "inclusion" are often buzzwords used as marketing tools which carry little real weight in organisations. She and Christine discuss how fearful leaders can take inclusive action, tackle unconscious bias through self-awareness, and stimulate genuine discussion around inclusivity and diversity through training and using Furkan's gamified approach.
CHRISTINE AND FURKAN DISCUSS:
Furkan being 'the only one' in the workplace.
Fudged figures of female representation at the top of organisations.
Bias and fear amongst organisational leaders.
The benefits of embracing true inclusivity and diversity within a business.
The characteristics and skills of inclusive leaders.
The concept of "Inclusive Intelligence."
Practical steps for organisations to promote genuine inclusion.
BEST MOMENTS
"I was the only one – woman, non-native speaker, Muslim. The manager's approach to you is different. You can sense it."
“The threat is what some people are afraid of. Women are just as skilled and intelligent – women are not being given the same opportunities as men."
“Diversity is you, because you are unique. Inclusion is accepting you.”
“Why do we have a broken system, what can we do to change that blockage for people to make our teams more diverse and more inclusive?”
“We need self-awareness first, vulnerability, courage, the ability to talk about emotions and approachability and all of these things together and keep learning… without that door open nothing is going in.”
