“I’ve just discovered Coleman and I’m really very interested in what he has to say. I must point out that in this episode quite a few sweeping statements were made about the royal family and how we Brits ‘worship the crown’. That’s a very inaccurate statement. I am myself a monarchist (it works very well for our country in lots of ways) but many people aren’t. The British royal family do have longevity, that’s true, but there complex reasons why they have remained at the heart of the structure of our country not least because they offer a stable figurehead which is not political and has no power - unlike a presidency for example. There are also enduring themes in democracy and separation of church and state in the UK which can be directly tracked back to Hendry VIII and the schism with Rome. There are many flaws in the idea of a monarchy, and Australia, contrary to what was said, has vocal opposition to the king being their head of state. It also was not mentioned that part of the opposition to Meghan was the perception of a ‘brash, opinionated American’ using her PR skills which does not go down well with the average Brit, so we are told anyway. I think a lot of this was our tawdry, right wing press wanting to sell papers and an easy way to do this is through making Meghan ‘other’ - too American, too not-white, too confident. They pick off all the royals in turn because we love to find fault with those who we are told are better than us might be the argument. I thought they were a breath of fresh air to begin with, although I must admit, some of Meghan’s mannerisms rankle - mainly because we are just not used to such displays of emotional fluency in our royals I suspect, or perhaps sense of entitlement by incomers (I really don’t know what it is but us Brits value self-deprecation to a fault). But I liked them and wished them well. It was so obvious the press sniffed vulnerability or at least a rich seam of copy and they rounded on them. I’m not saying they helped themselves but they are also just human beings muddling along too. However all that said, the repeated slating of their own family is increasingly hard to swallow, particularly what came across as their own self absorption carried on unabated as our own aged queen (a public servant and statesman without equal whatever your thoughts on the monarchy) was clearly frail and reaching the end. It’s difficult to see a way back for them now into the family they have torn to shreds. Very sad, but that’s family for you.
And as for Elvis - incredible musicianship and artistry (forget Hound Dog and other dross, some of the later stuff is sublime - ‘It’s Midnight’ for me. Robbie Williams - no. Saw him in concert and I’m just glad my ticket was free.”
