Addressing the root cause of my doubts
Patrick Mason’s work gives me vocabulary for thoughts I have been trying to solidify and articulate since I moved my young family from Utah to South Carolina where we lived with exemplary Christians of many faiths. The best I could do to this point is “The church is essential to our salvation but it is no where near as important as it’s members make it out to be.” But that statement does not say exactly what I feel about it. A comparison of exclusivism, relativism, and particularism does! This podcast gave me my first exposure to Patrick Mason’s work and it was incredibly enlightening. The missionary’s dissonance of being prepared to preach one true church but finding people are really just looking for goodness and finding it in many places, that was the seed of my doubts that started in the MTC, got doused with miracle grow when I got to São Paulo, and plagued me for 15 years. The RM’s realization that people have achieved a greater state of goodness than he had through buhdism, that was my experience with our Baptist neighbors in South Carolina. Thank you Faith Matters for bringing these important concepts to light. You’ve made me a subscriber.
