My favourite podcast
I'm astonished at how many people dislike poor Stephen Metcalf. I adore him. I first encountered him in the Slate Book Club discussions, where I admit he put me off by appearing never to enjoy anything. But there really are limits to his curmudgeonliness, and once I learned what they were I started to appreciate his positive qualities. His voice is lovely. He's also a fine host - an expert and civilised manager of conversation who never bullies or talks over the other equally excellent participants. The quality of conversation here can really be quite nice, especially when the contributors hit on a topic they all know and care about. They are lucid and articulate; there's rarely any awkward struggling to find the right word. You get the sense that everyone is at ease with the language. So I really think that people making accusations of pretentiousness, cultural or linguistic, are off the mark. True, the tone struck here can be obnoxious when college students affect it, but it seems to come naturally to these people. They also do show genuine love for and knowledge about "regular people's" pop culture, particularly Julia and June, when it comes to television, and Dana, when it comes to movies. This podcast is a consistently fun, interesting and informative look at a variety of cultural topics as seen by a group of smart, pleasant people.Read full review »

Another review here, one that gave the podcast five stars, asked who needs another dissection of low-brow celebrity-obsessed popular culture masquerading as cultural coverage. I certainly don't. That's why I've stopped listening to these pretentious twits. Using obscure language is a...Read full review »
