And I thought I was pretentious . . . .
I can't disagree with many of the reviews that have called this podcast out on being far too pretentious, snobbish and condescending. I think the main problem is that you get the distinct impression that these people either don't actually watch and/or don't actually like the things they review. You can get by with critiquing something that you find to be interesting or fun even if it isn't perfect, but if you start with the assumption that the thing you are reviewing is beneath you, your critique will always come off as elitist. I listen to a lot of pop culture podcasts and while I have found some interesting discussions on this one (the one on Sex and the City 2 was particularly good), I doubt I will contiue to listen. For an example of a podcast that both gives great insight to the material and yet also has a lot of fun with it, subscribe to NPR's Pop Culture Happy Hour, part of their Culturetopia series. NPR's pop culture blogger Linda Holmes and her crew are a hoot to listen to, but also give some of the most insight critique I've ever heard. And they manage to do it without sounding like they despise the entire world. In fact, it's exactly BECAUSE they enjoy the TV shows and movies they review that they are able to make fun of them in such a delightful way.Read full review »

Please don't be turned off by the bores that populate podcast. Stephen is unbearable in his hosting. I seldom make it through his first diatribe.Read full review »

Why should I be excited about this podcast when the hosts seem to be excited about nothing at all. Everything in life is a big "uhhh?" with a side of "blahhhh," huh? I must also note that they seem to have no style or personality whatsoever. I get the feeling they don't even belive anything...Read full review »

As a big fan of other Slate podcasts, I was pretty excited about this one, but it really is the weakest of the bunch. The participants are sooo snobbish, which I suppose makes sense, but it is not immediately apparent upon what grounds they are snobbish. On the Political Gabfest, Dickerson knows...Read full review »
