Pleasure, guilty or not.
I tend to believe that people who put this podcast down feel - as I often do - intimidated by the erudition of the panelists. The esoteric references are sometimes unknown to me, but that's what I want from a culture podcast: No Paris Hilton and the occasional reference to existentialism to make me feel less guilty about caring (so deeply) about Lady GaGa. I'm worried, in fact, that this gabfest has gotten less in-depth as a result of the criticism, which seems - in general - to suggest that knowing something the reviewer doesn't know is the essence of pretension. Why tune in to something that tells us more about what we already know? I LOVE Steven Metcalfe. I totally don't get it about the criticisms of him. I think he's generous to his other hosts, funny and wise and expects more from the culture than the culture generally coughs up. Adore him, he's why I tune in. I pathetically consider him a friend, albeit an eardrum friend who has no idea who I am. I listen to this first, Savage Love second, the Moth and This American Life are tied for third, if anyone cares.Read full review »

This is the only podcast I listen to regularly. I always find it interesting. If you follow the news and the arts (and your politics are left-leaning) you will probably like it too.

I love how the discussions on the Gabfest can often be abstract: deconstructing cultural phenomena. But sometimes they're just straight up critical reviews. Sometimes the discussion is political. Sometimes it's not. But it's always intelligent and insightful. These podcasts are rich...Read full review »
