Shows have declined. The smugness is overbearing.

I agree with most of what has been said -- both the good and the bad -- yet this is still my favorte Slate podcast. This, along with Filmspotting and On The Media, are easily my favorite shows. Sure, they don't always hit the mark, but they tackle a wide range of music, TV shows, and other cultural phenomena.
