Some seasons have captivated me more than others, but the host is consistently fantastic.

Absolutely riveting, detailed, great story telling - brilliant stuff

I’ll start by saying I like this show. I’ve listened to all three seasons. The stories are interesting, and framed and told well. But if there’s a season 4, I’m probably skipping it. First issue, the show moves slowly. I get the repetitive sound bite sense that’s typical of daytime TV - I don’t...Read full review »

Can’t get enough. I’ve listened to all seasons twice at least.

Could be a 5 star podcast if Pf*zer wasn’t a sponsor. I don’t care to hear about vaccines when I’m listening to a podcast

found this show via commercials on two other pushkin pods. its incredibly well-written and unfolds a single story throughout each season. its suspenseful without being overwhelming and keeps you hooked from episode to episode. not a show to miss. great work.

Sorry but I just can’t with Esther. First off, did you guys validate her sob story, because she comes off as an utter inauthentic bullsh!@er. The only reason I finished the season was to hear the updates on Natalie and Brooke. And the narcissist, aka Esther, doesn’t feel sorry for the pain she...Read full review »

Why on earth couldn’t a picture of the girl be sent to the parents to verify? It really was just that simple. So convoluted when it could have be sorted out rather quickly.

This was a great listen! It’s the type of “true mystery” podcast that I enjoy. Just a mystery, no gory-murder stuff at all.

Jake Halpern does a wonderful job of leading the listener into the lives and the choices of individuals who are living a double life. The podcast is produced to keep the listener’s interest. I enjoy it very much! Each season is unique. I feel like I understand the reasoning of the person making...Read full review »

This podcast mainly seems to focus, very sympathetically, around one woman who stole women’s identities and didn’t think it was a big deal. That and, embarrassingly, a policeman who thought she was a spy, without any proof whatsoever. I’m not sure what the story is here? It’s quite clear that...Read full review »

Season one was easily a five star podcast and one of the best I’ve ever listened to. Season two was a solid 4.5. Season three was a two stars at best. I can’t believe I listen to a full six episodes about a psychotic human being who feels more sorry for herself than for the things she did and...Read full review »

True crime stories with a look into the heart n motivation of the perpetrators. Jake delivers excellent journalism that is personal n relatable without being salacious. I love this show!

Her thesis is deeply flawed. She focuses on samples that are not representative of the justice system. She overtly ignores truths (or perhaps does not even know) that do not support her faulty thesis. For example, she does not even acknowledge all the warrants and cases that are never brought, or...Read full review »

I love this show, it’s interesting, there’s good storytelling, and it addresses true crime in a more respectful and less sensationalized way than many other podcasts I’ve listened to.

I listened to season 3 (not 2 and 2) and was impressed by the thoughtful research, organization, and narration of the story. It avoids the sensationalism and superficiality of a lot of other true crime podcasts.

Loved the podcast but do you really need to repeat the exact same advert over and over and over again? I totally get that you need ads - but the same one repeated every few mins is thoroughly irritating

Highly recommend this one. Great storytelling and narration. Interesting story about people who have gone through trauma and deal with such in different ways.

I was eagerly awaiting the second season after the first one on the Drug Wars, which was riveting. I think the second season had less to work with than the last (I mean drug smugglers, Noriega, etc!) but he manages the material much better. The pacing was perfect, and the interspersing of other...Read full review »

Great story telling by the narrator. It’s obvious that the team had put so much time into researching and interviews. Stories are interesting and they always leave you totally hooked at the end of every episode. Painfully littered by repetitive sponsor ads.

A really drawn out story which could have been told within two episodes. Much of the story gives a voice and sympathy to the criminal — Esther Reed. Criminals, especially con artists like her are manipulative and liars—why let someone like her garner sympathy when her victims didn’t have a voice?...Read full review »

I love Jake’s interviews and every season has received the same responsible, thoughtful reporting. There is a lot of salacious true crime coverage (yuck) and this isn’t that. Season 3 is the only one I’ve listened to and it was super well done. It is terrifying to me that Esther is a criminologist and professor. I don’t think her problem is social anxiety. Throughly enjoyed this pod cast and couldn't stop listening to! These are neat stories each season, they feel well researched, and well narrated. The breadth of the interviews they manage to get really round out the context in a way few investigative podcasts manage, it doesn’t listen like true crime, but something better.
