“Okay, I admit it, I’m a Gacyphile. I was a Chicago area kid in junior high when his shocking crimes came to light in the late ‘70s. For several months you couldn’t pick up a newspaper or tune into an evening newscast without seeing a John Wayne Gacy related story. Perhaps it’s because I was in such close proximity to the crimes and the victims were just a few years older than me that Gacy’s grisly crimes left a permanent scar on my psyche. Over the years I’ve consumed books, movies, and TV shows on the Killer Clown. I thought I knew it all until I discovered the Defense Diaries podcast a few months ago.
This new podcast by plain-spoken criminal defense attorney Bob Motta shines a new light onto the Des Plaines Police Department’s investigation that ultimately led to Gacy’s conviction and execution. Motta, the son of one of Gacy’s original defense lawyers, doesn’t deny the fact that Gacy was a cold-blooded murderer but presents compelling evidence that facing a dearth of evidence against the well liked local business owner, the D.P.P.D took a few liberties and essentially manipulated evidence to get their man. “But the ends justify the means, right?” WRONG! Along the way, Motta educates the listener on our legal system and our Constitutional rights and shows how the shortcuts taken by police to ensnare Gacy could have blown up in their faces and made Gacy a free man had things gone just a little bit different.
The best part about this podcast is you’ll hear the chilling voice of Gacy himself recounting many of the murders. Just before Gacy stood trial, Motta’s father recorded many hours of interviews with Gacy while preparing his defense. The younger Motta has sprinkled many of these recordings over the various episodes.
As an avid listener of a large variety of true crime podcasts, I recommend Defense Diaries without reservation! In my opinion, it’s one of the most unique and bingeworthy podcasts out there today. It will hook you and leave you longing for more.”
