“I like the premise of this show, and likely reading the blog myself would be fine. Reading your blog and recording it does not a podcast make. Consider getting someone with a more listenable quality to their voice perhaps? I listened to the Haunted Mansion episode first and thought that the droning narrative was meant to echo that of the ride. Then I realized that's just the narrator. It's unlistenable.
Then I got to the episode where the host disagrees with the assessment that Disney's America is white washed and ignores race and class dynamics units history. This is absolutely true, and I've read numerous dissertations about it. The whole of Disneyana is built on stereotypes - most of them are cringeworthy. The host felt that this discussion misses the point of what Walt intended. Did Walt intend to ignore and/or fetishize African Americans and Native Americans in his parks? Not intentionally I'm sure, but it's not a realistic portrayal of America. It's all Fantasyland. Admitting that now doesn't diminish what Disney contributed to animation. That the host couldn't concede it at all, along with this other issues of this show means I stopped listening.”Read full review »
