A generation unable to talk about art
I enjoyed episode one. I had sampled other podcasts about Dune and this one seem to be the perfect fit. But then the contamination about cultural appropriation, the “white savior complex” and homophobia started. Apparently the lack of knowledge about religions, namely Islam and its history didn’t deter the podcasters to exhibit the mandatory cringe about the perceived insult to modern day Muslims. Even though the Fremen and Zensunnis are presented throughout the Dune saga in the most heroic and respectful way. About the white savior thing, disregarding that the action takes place thousands of years into tue future and races are ambiguous they go on about how problematic it is, after praising the fact that Dune is the "hero's journey". The hero frequently is an outsider! It was Lawrence of Arabia and the brits that helped the Arab upraising against the turks! Now you may feel it's problematic but it is an historical fact that the Brits helped the arabs in their fight against the Ottoman empire because their interests were alined. And finally the homophobia, so all homosexual characters (assuming thar the Baron is gay, though most probably is a sadistic psychopath ) have to be positive? Isn't that dehumanizing? If you are a dick that doesn't understand art and how complex reality is, don't talk about it in public.Read full review »

This podcast has been one of the sustaining forces through the pandemic. I have been a Dune fan since I was a teen, many moons ago. I appreciate the insight and camaraderie of the hosts and am glad to be a part of the community. -Hex
