Ezekiel tells us how the presence of God reluctantly withdrew from the Temple in stages and eventually from the whole nation. The sins of the people had driven him from them. This is a sobering message highlighting the need for holiness but also giving us great hope in the Savior we have in Jesus, who brings God's presence to us through His cross.

The primary way the presence of God rested among God's people in the Old Testament was in the Tabernacle and the Temple, particularly over the Ark of the Covenant. Unfortunately, the people of God came to the point in their history of taking God's presence for granted, and consequently, they lost it.
