Question naming of crimes
Echoing others' praise; it's another solid podcast from Radiotopia. Because the producers are dealing with a sensitive population, I question some of their choices. Principally, I'm not convinced that identifying the inmates' crimes is a good editorial decision. What does it do for the story? And more importantly, what does it do for how we are supposed to think about these people? I'm on board with introducing the inmates along with their sentences, because knowing how long someone's been inside can contextualize what they're saying as regards, e.g., who they may want as a cellmate for the next 35 years. However, unless the crime they're in for contributes to the story being told, I think it's unnecessary, potentially reductive, and at worst harmfully essentializing for how we on the outside regard people on the inside.Read full review »
